Let me introduce to you Kareem Kourouma the 20-year-old designer from Texas conquering social media with his hand made coats and jackets. With an ever-growing following and talent it is no wonder that everyone wants one of his pieces. His talent was handed down from his mother, who used to make wedding dresses, however had to join the military to support his family. Kareem was taught how to sew by his mother when he was 14 years old, and has now been designing clothes for 5 years. Here is the exclusive first interview with Kareem on working at home, the future and his latest collection.

What sparked your interest in fashion?

My grandmother died when I was 12 and I had school the day of the funeral. I didn’t have to, but I decided to wear my funeral outfit to school. Most of my peers were confused as to why I would wear a shirt and tie to school, so I just told them it was because of the funeral, but it was actually because I thought my shirt and tie looked better than their t-shirt and jeans. The thought of knowing I looked better than the people around me gave me a good feeling so I ran with it.

Being a designer that lives and works in the same environment, how has that impacted the way you work?

Working in the same place that I live in can be difficult at times due to the lack of space. I’m not an organized person whatsoever so things get misplaced often. But other than losing things and getting distracted at times, I can’t complain too much though since it’s the only designing/ sewing environment I’ve ever been in. I definitely look forward to having my own work space in the future.

Who inspires you the most in fashion? Any designer that particularly stands out?

I can’t say that other designers or the fashion industry itself necessarily inspires what I make, but more so things in everyday life. I get most of my inspiration from 80’s high school movies because I watch them so frequently, and the same applies to everything else I enjoy in my daily life.

Regarding your incredible designs, what was the source of inspiration behind them?

There was no inspiration that went into the designs, but instead the collection as a whole, and once I saw the vision and knew what direction I wanted to take it in the designs just came naturally I guess.

How would you like us to perceive you?

I don’t care at all.

What are your milestones for the next year?

Within the next year I would like to be recognized as the greatest creative on the planet because I really do think anything is possible. But more realistically I would like to drop out of college, move out of Texas, have my clothing seen by prominent people who can help me move forward, have enough resources to create whatever I vision, and to get rid of my acne.

Kareem Kourouma is on his way to achieving major success in the fashion industry, with his latest collection selling out within 24 hours. With an exciting start to his career, we wish him the best of luck and success.
